Some interests develop over time - but there are some interests that develop instantly. For instance, I never wanted to watch Doctor Who when the rest of my family started watching it. I told everyone I thought it was stupid, when really I was just afraid I would become utterly obsessed. Eventually, my mother coaxed me into watching an Tennant episode when it was on TV - an almost audible click in my brain, and I was, indeed, obsessed.
When I get obsessed with something, it actually hurts not to think about and focus on it. When I try to focus on something else or miss a show, my head buzzes like it is vibrating, and my limbs feel like green and orange wire. I have been told that this may be and Asperger's related thing.
The same goes for Star Trek...

It wasn't until a couple of years ago, however, that I became obsessed. I sat down and watch a single TOS episode. Once again, I could actually hear a click in my head as my thoughts went to Star Trek, and Star Trek alone.
I would be interested in hearing whether or not others have these experiences, regarding obsessions.

I have to say you have a very cool blog site. I would tell you that there is more to life than Star Trek, but who are we kidding? Live Long and Prosper. Greetings from Texas. Tate's Other Side
ReplyDeleteI have to completely agree. I felt that way when starting to watch Doctor Who, all of the Star Trek series, and most recently, Dexter, Downton Abbey, Bones, and Mad Men. Especially with instant television, like On Demand and Netflix, where you can sit and watch an entire season without pause. OMGYum.
ReplyDeleteI've been obsessed with Star Trek since watching syndicated repeats in the late 80s. I'm obsessed with the actor Colin Farrell, and have been since his appearances on Ballykissangel.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really an obsessive person. I guess I can't relate. And just ignore all the Muppet clothes, books, dolls, DVDs, VCR tapes, CDs, glasses, Pez dispensers, watches...
ReplyDeleteI am averse to commitment; therefore, I am far, far from obsessive. BUT, I love the old Star Trek re-runs.

I don't know that I have had the same "click" experience, but there are certain things that I am passionate about. One of those happens to be Doctor Who. I can't remember a time when I didn't know what Doctor Who was, so I was brought up on the show. I'm not alone in that--many who are of my generation could say the same thing. But not all of them developed the fascination for the show as some of us did. :) Speaking of Who, you might like my "I" article for today... :)
ReplyDeleteI am slightly obsessive but never to the point of hearing clicks or buzzing. That is interesting. I get obsessive about writing, I can hardly pull myself away from whatever my current writing project is. When I do have to drag myself away from it because my family expects to be fed three times a day, I go about my meal preparation time thinking about scene after scene in one of my stories. Rehearsing the lines in my mind until they sound just right. Some of my stories require music, and so I usually have my earbuds on, listening to my iPod Shuffle. I try not to get too irritated when someone inevitably interrupts my reverie and I have to hit the pause button.
ReplyDeletei am currently obsessed with the show mad men... not sure why? but it is good... your hair is interesting... i like it...
ReplyDeleteI didn't click with ST or Dr. Who immediately, it was more a low grow for me. But I like them both now. I like SF broadly speaking. I think I'm more obsessive about music, and it clicks faster for me. I have a unscientific theory that we all have these pockets of special interest, for some it's sports, for some its shopping, and others SF and tribbles.
