Gold Key Star Trek Comic Issue 2 Tyvek Mighty Wallet

A few months ago, I was working at my job when my best friend came over and told me that she had gotten something for me and gave me the most amazing wallet I had (and have) ever seen. I am finally going to be putting it to use, but decided to take some photographs of it first - before it starts getting worn out.

A description of this wallet's design from the Dynomighty website:
Faithfully reproduced with elements of Issue 2 from the Star Trek comic series remembered by fans as "The Key Collection". Originally published by Gold Key between 1967 and 1978.
These wallets are recycled and recyclable, waterproof and tear-proof.

There's really not much else that I can say without practically quoting the website directly or gushing over the wallet's beauty. If you would like a tyvek Mighty Wallet of your own, check out the Dynomighty website here.

Alien Spotlight - Volume 1 2008 - Vulcans

A is for Alien Spotlight!

About a year ago, I was in a local grocery shop when I stumbled (literally) into a rack of comics that I had never seen before - for only eight dollars each (Canadian). One of the comics I picked up that day was IDW's Alien Spotlight Volume One - a collection of "one-shots" featuring the Borg, Andorians, Orions, Vulcans, and Romulans.

My favorite story (as one might predict) is the spotlight on the Vulcans. Not only does it center around Spock, but it also takes place under the command of Captain Christopher Pike!

I have scanned some of the key panels - spoilers ahead.

According to this comic, Spock was not readily accepted by the crew of the enterprise. His logical stand on issues such as life and death is creating "friction" among them.

Captain Pike considers getting him reassigned. After preparing to beam down to meet the Magefferan Military Leaders in the City of Pomapoli, they arrive on a planet covered in debris, unable to contact the Enterprise. The Magefferans attack, and the crew discovers that the phasers are jammed as well. One of the crew members is killed, causing another logical statement from Spock:

Captain Pike feels that this mission may confirm that Spock be reassigned. Captain Pike and Lieutenant Tyler decide to attack the Magefferans, despite Spock's reminder that they came on a mission of peace.

Lt. Tyler gets angry at Spock, accusing him of not "giving a damn about anything". Against Spock's disagreement with the plan, the go on to attack the Magefferans. The Magefferans realise that they have been distracted from some of the crew sneaking off to destroy the jammer, and capture them, stating that they will "cut their throats, one by one". As they struggle to hold down the Captain and Lt. Tyler, they notice Spock:

Pike deduces that a majority of the Magefferans have never seen a Vulcan before.

The Magefferan leader does not believe Spock, but Spock proves himself and his emotional control. The Magefferans are intrigued, and agree to listen. (Click images to enlarge)

Afterwards, the Magefferans had their medical staff analyse Spock, and sending him from leader to leader. After days, they were convinced  to board the Enterprise to continue negotiations. Mediators were sent to the planet, most of them Vulcan, to continue the Federation's work. Captain Pike - and the rest of the Enterprise Crew - begin to accept Spock, even if they still do not understand.

When I have a child, I will read it this story every night. It's definitely worth finding a copy, as one is not only entertained, but gains an insight into various species' as well. And no, I'm not being paid to endorse this collection.

It even has a "charming" page about the Borg meeting a little girl. It makes me laugh every time I see it, and then I feel kind of bad.

The girl is the Borg Queen.

Adorable.

Vintage Star Trek Comic - The Choice Part One

I was going through my box of comics this morning, and I came across the Star Trek comic from 1978 that I got at an antique book store: Star Trek: A Dynabrite Comic - The Evictors and The Choice. The price on the cover is 69 cents - I only wish comics still cost that much, instead of the 5-20 dollars I am used to.

As always, click images for larger, readable scans.

How impossibly epic!

While reading the introduction (out loud, to all of those around me - whether they cared or not) I used my epic-shatner voice. It's the only way to do it. But wait - who is that with Kirk? And why are they fencing, of all things?

But fencing is Sulu's forte!
Then suddenly: atoms, and the birthplace of the universe! No origin story has ever been so captivating! I can hardly tear my eyes from the page! They are practically glued on with excitement!

The birthplace of the universe!

Atoms! Comets! Planets! Moons!

And back to the Enterprise.
Now on to the action - where we see Scotty running to his station while shouting in a... Jamaican accent?

Aye, mon, makin' like hares, mon.
All of the sudden, STUFF happens (oh no, not STUFF!) and they find themselves... NOWHERE! (Insert dramatic music)

Mr. Spock, assess the situation!

Nowhere! (To be precise)
We find out that they may just be in... someplace RADICAL! A capsule floats around outside... menacingly and capsule-like.

In the atom... everything is fine?
Inside the primal atom, they prepare to board a pod that is controlled by Lt. Nova - she wears a suit that allows her to control the pod with her movements. I can just imagine her sitting there, wiggling her arms around.

I want that suit. Really badly.
Just moments after the cylinder is captured and brought on board, it begins to open, unaided by the crew! (Suspense!)

Gee, could it be someone's double? Again?
Somehow Kirk often seems to gain a double, and this is no different. "Kirk" jumps out dramatically and immediately begins giving orders.

Except he wear a blue uniform. And not even a cool science-blue like Spock or McCoy.
Finally we get an explanation by "Kirk" himself! I won't ruin it for you, you will have to read it for yourself, before moving on.

Over and over! And over! And over!
Finally we come to the end of part one - where we find out why exactly he had to get to this Enterprise... and we end with an agreement: A fight to the death! The last panel is my favorite. I don't know why, but I find it highly amusing every time I see him wave out his hand and declare, "I'm GAME!"

I'm GAME!
That's it for part one of "The Choice". I regret I will have to keep you in suspense, check back in a day or two for the conclusion!
